Slapshot Bar & Grill

Famous & Interesting Historical Site ~ circa 1857! Heritage Belleville Architectural Building The Philip Canniff House ~ 151 Cannifton Road Did you know that Slapshot is located at the The Philip Canniff House? We have quite the history here. Our home is architecturally protected by Heritage Belleville. The Mill Story ~ a peek into the original family Built in 1857, this well proportioned brick home was once the property of Philip Flaglar Canniff. His father, Jonas, gifted him this land, which is located on the east side of "the plank road from Belleville to Canniff's Mills". Philip subdivided the area and named it Wellington Plot, after his eldest son. Byron Street was named after his second son. Jonas and his wife, Letitia Flagler, moved to Thurlow, from Adolphustown, in 1820 and built a saw mill as well as a grist mill. Jonas also built a dam across the river now called the Old Lazier Dam. His 3 sons were born in the family home, which stood at the south end of what is now known as Riverside Park. In 1851 Jonas gave the mills to his two oldest sons. James built a new flowering mill, while Philip expanded the saw mill; the Moira Paper Mill which focused on manufacturing, printing, wrapping and manila papers. Equally enterprising was the third son William, who became a doctor and was the first Public Health Director for Toronto. He also wrote The Settlement of Upper Canada in 1869 and The Medical Profession in Upper Canada. In 1858, Philip sold his house to Annanias Tarrant. Before the turn of the century Cornelius Donovan and his family were living there. The house was still owned by their descendants until the 1980 s, after which, the house was converted into a restaurant. A Restaurant is Born ~ Since 1995 First a fish and chips restaurant, then The Brick Works Bar, it did not become known as Slapshot Bar & Grill until 1995 and the rest is history. Over the course of a decade, Slapshot fast became known as Belleville's favorite pub - "famous for wings", priding itself on great food at great prices. Recent renovations in 2005 solidified Slapshot as one of Quinte's most successful independent restaurants with expansion plans slated for 2010.
